My daughter has been rocking a princess crown for the last 2 weeks. She wears it EVERYWHERE and I really don’t mind. It seems to make her feel good and it seems harmless. All that being said, I would let her wear a super hero cape if that’s what she was into. When she was very little, she would love to wear her dragon costume out.
Does she think she is going to grow up and be a princess? No, she will tell you that she is going to be a scientist. She knows she has to go to college, she is okay with that as long as she can still live at home (Hah! we know this will change). She doesn’t think she’ll have a castle full of servants in later years. I did let her watch a bit of Downton Abbey, so she doesn’t think ANYONE should have servants.
Is this sparkly little crown damaging my 5 year old or giving her unrealistic expectations? I don’t think so. I think those things come with how you are raising your little one, not what you are letting her wear.
Have your kids ever gone through a costume phase? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

What a fun evening that was!
